Lawn Mower Safety

When working with your lawn mower, read your operator’s manual and pay close attention to all warning labels.

Wear proper clothing when mowing your yard; including a tucked-in shirt, long pants and closed-toed shoes with good traction. Secure or remove loose articles of clothing or jewelry so they don’t catch on the equipment.

Walk the mowing area first and clear any tools, toys, yard debris or other objects that could get thrown by the mower’s blade.

Before you start your lawn mower, check to make sure all safety guards and shields are in place.

Keep children inside and under supervision while mowing your yard. Never give children “rides” on a riding lawn mower. As a result, your children may run up behind you as you’re mowing, expecting another ride, where you can’t see or hear them.

Be careful not to run over your own toes when walking backward with a walk-behind mower.

When mowing in hot weather, make sure to drink plenty of water and rest frequently.

Fresh Gas

Fresh Gas — Fresh gas (87 or higher octane rated) is critical to an engine’s performance. To fill the mower’s tank, use a clean funnel to draw gasoline from either a one- or two- gallon gas can. Plastic gas cans are a good choice because they won’t rust. If you own a five-gallon gas tank, dispose of it properly; the problem with a five- gallon can is that it provides the user with more than a 30-day fuel supply. Gas that is older than 30 days may affect engine performance. Moisture buildup and octane loss can lead to gum deposits in the engine’s fuel lines and carburetor, which can lead to poor engine performance.

Equipment Tip – Maintenance

Chances are your mower has been sitting dormant in a garage for three, four, maybe even five months. It’s time to get that thing out and show it some love. There are a few things you’ll need to do. First, change the oil, air filter and spark plug. This is basic yearly maintainence that will keep your machine running smoothly for years longer than it would if you neglected it. If you don’t care to attempt these upgrades yourself, a mower repair shop or sales facility will take care of it for you in exchange for a bit of money.
